This Sunday's Freddie ad is downright boring. There's nothing to elicit more than a lingering yawn. Here's what we see today:
Store brand canned vegetables are 50 cents each with a limit of 10. The ad says it excludes canned asparagus. That's code for "everything's included." Hominy is included, for example, as is spinach. Typically the yellow wax beans and whole green beans are featured in this periodic sale. We generally go buy 30-50 cans when they are on sale. And, believe it or not, we actually USE what we buy. That's unusual, eh?
Well, here's a tip you might not know about these "limit ten" sales. You can buy as much as you want on a single visit to the store by making sequential and separate purchases. Here's how we do it to keep things easy: First we go get a bunch of cash, specifically several five dollar bills and a matching number of one dollar bills. Then we go get all our canned goods and have them segregated in groups of ten. You can get your bags before you go to the canned goods and simply put each group of ten in its own paper bag or bring your own or whatever.
Then you apply the same in store coupon for all of the purchases using the self check area so you won't hold up another customer in a regular line. You ring up ten cans and then pop in six bucks cash money and, voila, out pops 70 cents change. Ring ten more and pop in six bucks and the same thing happens. believe it or not, this isn't a cumbersome process, especially if you do it during the off peak shopping hours, preferably during the morning when few shoppers prowl the aisles. With gas prices being what they are, it sure beats making several trips to Freddie to do what can be done in a single trip. This sale is a great time to stock up on hominy and canned green beans of all types. We eat a lot of canned spinach--we call it "salad in a can" so we buy a lot of that, too. The good stuff in that sale is usually gone by mid-morning Sunday so we simply wait until later in the week when they have a chance to restock the shelves.
OK, what else is happening at Freddie? Half gallons of orange juice are $1.25. That's as low as that price gets. It's a store coupon item and the limit is eight. Since orange juice is highly acidic, it has a huge, long code date sometime weeks in the future. This is a great time to buy four gallons of orange juice for the early summer ahead.
Cucumbers and green peppers are 33 cents each--that's a lot cheaper than even WINCO is charging right now. Freddie's cukes and peppers are much better quality than WINCO's--no doubt about it. This week's price is as low as prices for those two items will be for awhile unless there's an accidental glut on the market this summer.
Another produce item worth a look see is the Baby Bella mushrooms, whole or sliced in 8 ounce pkgs. for a mere $1.50. That's a screaming deal but, by itself, isn't worth a special trip to Freddie. Maybe we will pick up some while we are hoarding canned vegetables.
Yes, we're well aware we still haven't posted up the results of our olive oil study. However, we can say with absolute certainty that THE BEST deal on olive oil lies at Freddie. (Quality not price.) So, we might as will tell you about it in this post in case you are heading that way to take advantage of some of this week's Sunday specials. Up on the tippy top shelf of the olive oil section (it's in the baking aisle beside regular oils) are four tall, dark, square 500 ml bottles. Each is from a different country of origin: Italy, Spain, Australia and the USA (via California olives). They were on sale for $5 each when I bought them but regular price is only $5.50. That makes them the equivalent of $11 a liter. They are BY FAR the best olive oil available in this city and well worth your confident purchase. The taste of the California oil is off the charts good and will hands down beat anything else you can find in Idaho Falls at any price. (Some olive oil in the city goes for as high as $50 a liter!) It's amazingly good and we suggest you give it a try. It's going to take us awhile to put together our notes from our olive oil study but at least you now know where the hands down winners are here in Idaho Falls.
Happy Shopping and Many Cheers! jp
