Strawberry fields are forever

Freddie has California strawberries for $1.50 a pound today. They are in one pound clamshells. That's about as low as you're going to get strawberries in those small packages. They will go down to their typical dollar-a-pound level soon but the package size will increase to 3-4-5 pounds. The small packages rarely go below a buck fifty unless there is a genuine glut.

There's not much else in the Freddie ad to talk about. Don't bother with Freddie's pork chop special. When they sell "assorted chops" is always means half of them aren't even fit for your dog to eat. The top of the package will look great. Underneath these teaser chops will be a bunch of ugly pork chops filled with fat, gristle and knarly bones. WINCO has some awesome boneless chops right now for $1.68 a pound, a mere 9 cents higher than Freddie's so-called special.

Bandon cheese is on special at Freddie for $4 for a 2-pound brick. It's a coupon item and there's a limit of 2. WINCO's price for the same product is $5 so Freddie beats WINCO for a change.
Brandon cheese is made by Tillamook and it's almost identical to Tillamook's taste for medium cheddar. It's a good middle of the road cheese.

Freddie is also featuring Yuban coffee for $5. WINCO wants $6 for the same thing and the other highway bandit stores want about $10 for the large can. I saw one of the bandits asking $11 for it the other day. The audacity of it all! The coffee special is a coupon special, too--limit two.

Hey, you might not know this. Freddie's coupon limit is NOT a "per store visit limit." Nope, it's a "coupon limit." You could buy 100 cans of Yuban if you felt like it. Here's how you do it. (I've explained this before but it bears repeating.) First take a bunch of ten dollar bills and a bunch of one dollar bills on your shopping trip. Next, fill you cart with all the Yuban you care to buy, 5-10, 20 cans, who cares? Next, go to the self checkout line. Give your coupon to the attendant and tell her you plan to make multiple purchases of the Yuban. Then scan two cans. She scans the coupon. You pay by sliding a ten and a one dollar bill through the machine. Forty cents falls into the change cup. Then you repeat the process for as many times as you wish to buy two cans of Yuban. It's a whole heck of a lot easier to use nearly exact change than it is to swipe cards or write checks. Trust me. When you're finished, scoop your accumulated change out of the cup and boogie home. Be sure to smile at the attendant on your way out!

The other two things I noticed in the Freddie as were Progresso soup for $1.25 (coupon--limit 8) and Organic avocadoes for $1.50. Typically the organic avos are very large and MUCH more flavorful than the ordinary stuff. They are WELL worth a buck fifty! Roma tomatoes are 88 cents and green onions and radishes are 44 cents each. Freddie has excellent quality romas, green onions and radishes. Too bad they are "perishables."
