Basha's FEB06 Weekly Ad

Since we know we're heading to Basha's to break down their doors to get our asparagus fix (see post below), let's take a look at their ad first for this week's marketing cycle.

Basha's isn't normally the type of store to feature a LOT of deals.  However, this week appears to be a notable exception to that general rule of corporate stinginess.  It's worth noting that ever since Basha's came out of bankruptcy, they have loosened their tight-wad grip on prices.  Every now and then, their weekly ad is chock full of goodies.  That's the way it appears this week.

(NOTE: After a closer look, the ad wasn't as full of goodies as we first thought.  We'd rate this ad perhaps a C+, maybe a B- if we were being charitable to Basha's.  However, there are enough good deals to make it worth the trip, especially since we're going there if only to buy asparagus!)

Five pounds of Green Giant red potatoes for 97 cents is a screaming deal for the reds.  That's less than half of what they normally sell for.

BNLS, SKNLS Chicken breasts (CBs) for $1.77 a pound is about as low as they go.  The trouble with Basha's CBs is that the meat units are abnormally large and there are too many of them in a so-called "Value Pack."  You can easily spend more than $10 a pack so watch out.

BNLS Beef top sirloin steak is a mere $2.99 a pound.  This stuff is tuff as a shoe but the best thing to do is ask the butcher to "chili grind" the steak.  You end up with a fabulous chili meat for as low a price as you're likely to find.  The chili ground sirloin steak is very lean so you can add other, healthier fats to your chili if you use this particular cut.  Also, the chili ground meat takes a seasoning rub or marinade very well.

Basha's is running one of those "buy four--get two bucks off" gigs.  The only items worth messing with are Ragu pasta sauces for 99 cents (net), Wishbone dressing @ $1.49 (net) and Best Foods mayo for $2.49 (net).  We could easily buy four of each and save a bundle on this particular aspect of their "buy 4-get 2" sale.

There's nothing attractive in the produce section, save perhaps for 99 cent/lb. large slicing tomatoes.  The trouble with those tomatoes is that they are hard as a rock and you practically need a chain saw to slice them.  They are OK for roasting.

Basha's bread is $2.59 a loaf.  Their store brand bread is OK--nothing spectacular--but a decent deal when it's on sale such as this week.  We will buy a couple of loaves and freeze one of them.

Sargento Shredded Cheese is on sale for $2.88.  At that price it isn't a good deal.  However, Sargento has been running coupons lately so we will be able to buy this cheese for a lower price.  How much lower and for what variety, we're not sure but we will at least check it out.  Not all deals are what they might seem to be and we typically watch this type of a deal with a very wary eye.

Don't pay any attention to the 50% off Shamrock Sale.  Shamrock's prices are astronomically high so half off of ridiculous is still ridiculous.

There is one other item we will buy this week--Hunt's Ketchup for $1 each.  We will probably buy 2 or three of them.  Why?  Well, this is the version that clearly states it has "NO High Fructose Corn Syrup" in it. ALL other ketchups are loaded with HFCS--read the labels.  Normally, Hunt's charges a premium because they took out the HFCS.  When we see it for a buck, we jump it with both feet.

Well, that's about it for Basha's.  We will report anything "extracurricular" that we might see when we visit the place.
