Chicken anomaly

You may never have noticed this but it's a fact.  This anomaly is ALWAYS present in all stores.  When various chicken parts are featured on sale, that sale NEVER includes chicken wings.  I can't ever recall seeing chicken wings on sale.  It's bizarre.

OK, let's take Smith's this week.  Really nice bone-in chicken breasts are 99 cents a pound.  The tray packs typically have four breast halves and are selling from #3.75 to roughly $4.60.  In other words, the average price of each breast half is about a buck.  That's a decent price for roughly a pound of protein (incl. skin and bone).

Now look around and you will see chicken wings sitting there at $1.99 a pound.  That's their typical price although I have seen Albertson's charge as much as $3 a pound for them.  OK, that means the wings are twice as expensive as the breasts.  I just visited the USDA's Nutritional Analysis website and here's what you are getting for double the price.  The wings have:

73 % more fat
68% more saturated fat
15% LESS protein, and
20% MORE cholesterol!

And that's before they are cooked.  Most people bake or grill their bone-in breasts and that actually makes them upwards of 20% lower in fat.  However, most people bread and fry their chicken wings and that can skyrocket the fat content to has much as 280% more than a baked bone-in chicken breast.

Some deal for double your money, eh?
